Switch it up! Event idea and interest

Postby Duke_of_Krondor » Thu Aug 09, 2012 5:08 pm

I'm looking at running a small fantasy event (at some point) where everyone brings along 1k army. Then things get interesting...

3 games, 1k vs 1k.
Normal swiss style tournament except you don't play with the army you bring. Armies are randomised between competitors for each game.
Points are earned for wins loses and draws (3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss) but you also earn points for your army list and it's performance (to stop people throwing in weak lists!) at a rate of 1 bonus point per victory!

It'd be a fun event on a Saturday and people would need to bring an army they don't mind others pushing around a table, their army book (and notes on the army list - how it works, magic items and weird rules) and a sense of fun.

Anyone up for this (in theory). If there is interest then I'll look at setting it up. Any thoughts on the format are welcome.

Current concerns:
What if you face your own list? Bonus point system is unfair then. I may say;
1 bonus point for your list winning 1 game
3 bonus points for your list winning 2+ games

Do people think we should randomise armies for each game or just once at the beginning (allow people a learning curve)?

I'm in. I think random each game, more of a challenge.

Done this before at Ribble Warriors, and was awesome. Was thinking 2000 points would be better, but involves knowing more rules and armies, so 1000 points is probably better. We could get one of each army types between us all probably.

Make it more interesting and base the lists around the Battalions box set lists.

I went for 1000 points so we could fit three games in without things dragging (due to learning curves and referencing). I've toyed with 1250 but 1000 seemed a decent amount.

Now I have interest I'll look at ideas for army comp. Battalions could be interesting.

I've also had a suggestion it should be called 'Fantasy Swingers' but I pointed out that may attract a different crowd....

I've come up with the following 1k lists, based on the Battalion sets:

Lizardmen:
Scar-Vet, shield, gamblers armour (hv arm, 6+ ward), Burning blade chotek (-2 save, flaming) - 128
Skink priest, Diadem power (save 2 pwr dice to use as dispell) - 90
20 Saurus, command - 250
12 skink skirmishers, Jav + shield, Champ - 102
10 Temple guard, command - 195
5 Cold One knights, Command, Flame attack banner - 235

Warriors of Chaos:
Exhalted hero, Add hw, Potion Strength - 134
Sorcerer (Fire), Rod of Torment (bound spell lv3, 24", 2d6 st 3) - 130
12 Warriors, Command, Gleaming pennant (re-roll 1st failed Ld test) - 227
20 Marauders, Flails, Lt Arm, Command - 140
5 Warhouns - 30
5 Warhounds - 30
5 Knights, Command - 250
Spawn - 55

Seems alright.

Quite a good idea.

I may field my high elves (since they're painted) so a unit of 20 spearmen, 10 archers then add some high elf specials and a 'cheap' lvl 2 mage!

Drafting a rules pack over the week. Hoping to organise this for a date over the next couple of months. I'll stick a draft up soon.
