Star Trek Attack Wing

Postby Ian H » Wed Feb 05, 2014 10:44 pm

OK, this seems to have built at least a little bit of momentum at Pigmar, and I'm convinced enough to buy in. I just thought it would be handy if folks who play, or plan to play, this game mention what factions' ships they intend to get hold of - so I can make sure I get something different, for variety. I'm thinking of getting an extra Klingon ship or two at the moment, but if anyone's already got some, I'll get something else.

I have a question, as I have a load of x-wing stuff, would i need to rebuy dice and measurement materials for this or could i just buy ships?

Yep, I'm still up for a game and I have my own set now, so more dice!

Rob - I can't think of any reason off the top of my head why you couldn't get by with the X-Wing templates and dice, as long as you knew the rules (which you can get for free as a pdf on the manufacturer's site). Even if the X-Wing templates are different, I'm sure it'll only be fractional, so as long as both players are using the same ones it's probably fine. I'm also pretty sure that while the exact designs on the dice are different, they're otherwise the same. The safe thing to do is check it against an X-Wing set I guess...

Oooh, I found this, which is quite handy - an online list builder, which tells you the rules for all the upgrade cards and things. http://www.dracossoftware.com/STAWHome.html

I'm not sure about the dice but you can't use the templates as they are not the right one

Space Mats

Postby Adastra » Fri Feb 21, 2014 12:10 pm

I'm looking into getting a background to play on, I've been hunting for ages and come down to a couple of options.
The issue I have is size ... according to the rules the play surface should be 3 foot square, is everyone agreed on playing on this small a surface? as we have played all games so far at the club on a 4 foot square, but i play at home on 3 foot and it feel better, ships start closer together, less opportunity to stay out of a fight in 3+ player games.

Option 1

There's a space fabric that a company in the states makes, it's just normal printed cotton fabric so should be quite cheap compared to getting a specific battle mat. Should the company come back to me with a decent postage price then i'll get enough ordered for a couple of backgrounds.
I would copy a link, but it's on my PC at home.
The fabric itself is ~ $15 for enough for one board worth (+ postage)

Option 2

Ordering a specific battle mat, the cheapest i found comes out at $32 including delivery, but it looks like it would be fairly thick felt, and annoying to fold / roll up. there isn't much detail on the basic mat, plus reviews say they are shockingly slow to deliver. upgraded mats with more detail run at $42.

Option 3 (more work, but really cheap)

Buying plain black fabric and airbrushing on a background, Hobycraft are doing an amazing deal on fabric paints at the moment (clearing old stock), and getting plain fabric would come out at less than £5 a mat. I could also make the mat's 4x4 with a 6inch plain border around the edge for templates etc so it fits on the 4x4 at the club nicely, but gives the correct 3x3 playing area.

Thoughts?

Templates

Postby Adastra » Fri Feb 21, 2014 12:28 pm

Another thing ...

I find it tiresome to be passing about the templates when i play at home, so i'm going to Cad up the templates and laser cut myself another set.

Would you guys be interested in a set? i'm aiming to get them drawn out asap, as i have a session planned on the cutter the first weekend in March. I could do them in any colour of perspex you liked, but i'd need to order the materials in, not expecing it to be expensive, an A4 of perspex is ~£5 depending on colour. and that should be more than enough to get a full set of templates out of. I'm going for Pigmar Pink ;-)

Option 3 sounds good. We can get things exactly how we want them that way. Can work on them at terrain day mark 2 and the club would pay for it.

If you are going to make the templates though I will definitely take a batch. I sense some Attack Wing based purchases in my future....

Rob ... The dice from X-wing are usable ... they have slightly different symbols, but they are in essence the same. so you won't need to get them.

I just ordered a DS9 set and a defiant, boredom hits my wallet something aweful!

If the club wants a space mat, then i'm happy to get extra fabric and do one on terrain day, i'll still be doing one for myself tho.

It's them. You can only get that one in the starter set.

I've got a couple of Dominion ships already, and i've got Fed ships on order. I'll probably build up both, but i'll primarily be playing donimion i think.
Go with whatever, wasn't meant as a comment to disuade you from Klingon if that's what you wanna do.

No, I realise that. Was just momentarily concerned that there was going to be a lot of the same. Im actaully 50/50 on klingon and romulan now. Might get 2 starter sets which would give the ships i need for both if i can find them cheap. Or does anyone know somewhere that sells starter ships outside the box?

DS9 has arrived!!!

$%£* me is it big! I can't say i'd seen a proper picture that gave a sense of scale, it's 11" round.
Now all i need is for the defiant to find it's way to me and i'll be able to work out if i can crew both it and DS9 properly out of the cards that come with the defiant.

Ian, in that list of scenarios were there any OP ones for DS9? i'm going to try to find some over the weekend anyway, just thought i'd ask.

Not in the ones I printed out, but the guy had transcribed some of those too. I just formatted the forum posts from here:

http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=479784

But you can get the full versions of the OP scenarios as pdfs from the Wizkids site:

http://wizkidsgames.com/dominionwar/

I haven't read through all of them but I think at least two use the DS9 stuff.

Peoples thoughts on the mechanics of DS9 last night?

I'm not sure about the away team mechanic, as most ships are limited to 1 or 2 crew, so there's not a huge opportunity to pile in to take the station. plus there's not really any notes on what the crew do once you own the station, presumably you can use an action to beam them back off, or presumably you can leave 2 there as the crew of DS9. but once you own it can your opponent come and attempt to board it again?
That asside it does give the possibility for some interesting scenarios to be writen around taking stations or planets etc, or even rescue missions for derelicts.

as for DS9 itself, I think it's use in a game is pretty limited.

If it's an objective but none scoring ship like last night, then it's just avoided unless you can sneak up on it inbetween the pilons firing arcs to drop an away team on to try to take it, and if it's a ship that's part of your fleet then it will be avoided till late on and the Fed player will be at a 60 odd point defecit until that point, but once it is in play it would rip through ships that got too close. within range 2 of a pilon firing arc you'll be getting an attack from the pilon and another from the ring, so 10 dice, 5 in the form of a torpedo of some sort, probably photon, so you can guarentee a crit, which you could use Sisko to make a guarenteed warp core breach (once per game)
KABOOM!

I'm working on scenarios that use DS9 so watch this space (pun intended!)
